Background:

Bandaraduwa village is situated in the Ampara District in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Economically the village is extremely poor. The villagers are farmers who engage in chena cultivation during 6 months of the year. The rainy period is from October to February/March. The rest of the year is very dry. The crops they grow are Cow Pea, Maize and occasionally Mung Beans.
bandaraduwa2.jpg (28237 bytes) There are about 200 families in Bandaraduwa. School going children are approx. 175 in number. The children are under-nourished and poor. Often they don't even have proper school uniforms for them to attend regular school. The facilities they have are the mere basics

Objective of the Project:

Cost: The estimated cost of the project ($740) was provided by I-FREED.

Project Manager: In Sri Lanka, the project is managed by Ms. Ramani Wickramaratne.

Progress: The solar panels and the ancillary equipment to light seven bulbs have been commissioned.
