Hurricane Katrina will be remembered in the United States History for the immense devastation of the gulf coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama as well as almost complete flooding of the City of New Orleans. This storm made its first land fall as a category 1 storm in the Miami Dade/Broward county line. Following this, it intensified to a category 5 storm and made a second landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana with 145 mph winds on August 29th 2005. It passed over the eastern edge of Louisiana and made a third landfall near the Louisiana/Mississippi border with 125 mph winds. This hurricane and the resultant flooding left the city of New Orleans uninhabitable and in urgent need to evacuate over a million people. While accurate numbers are not available yet, the death toll from Katrina is estimated to be in thousands. I-FREED, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan American Association of Houston (SLAAH) and the Houston Buddhist Vihara (HBV) will be mounting relief operations in the Houston area. Assistance will be targeted at the many evacuees that have arrived in Houston. Due to the minimal overheads of the organizations, your donations will be utilized exclusively for the benefit of the affected individuals.
