Tampitiya Preschool Project

Project is 100% completed!!!

Background
This project was implemented at the request of "Jayagrahanaya-Vayamba" (SUCCESS-North Western Province). Tampitiya is a remote village located in the jungle near the boarder between the Ampara and Batticaloa districts of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. At present, it is the last outpost in the government controlled area on the A5 Highway. There are 350 families. Villagers earn their living by cultivation of small plots of land. The majority of the population is poor with inadequate access to education and healthcare.

Objective of the Project
The main objective of the project was to construct pre-school building to replace the existing dilapidated building. All children of Tampitiya village, approximately 30 between the ages of 3 and 5 years of age, attend this pre-school. Education is provided free of charge and the salaries of the pre-school teachers are paid by Success-NWP organization.

Project Cost
I-FREED funded the total cost of the building of $800.00. Significant cost savings were realized due to active volunteerism of the villagers.

Project Manager
Dr. M. B. Kottegoda, and Mrs. R. Kottegoda from Sri Lanka managed the project on a voluntary basis.

Project:
This picturesque village has a beautiful irrigation reservoir and the village temple, where the chief incumbent Ven. Tampitiye Gnananda Thero gives an exemplary leadership to the families living there. A camp of the police Special Task Force (STF) provides security to the village which had earlier been subjected to several terrorist attacks.

SUCCESS organization (Wayamba) commenced a Preschool Development Program for remote villages in 1992. A total of 51 preschools were inaugurated of which 30 are being totally managed by us.

I-FREED of Houston, Texas donated $500 in September 2003 for supplying educational equipment to the preschools conducted by SUCCESS (Wayamba). Mr. Lionel Tennakoon of I-FREED accompanied us to Tampitiya to hand over the first donation to this school. After observing the dilapidated state of the school building, Mr. Tennakoon promised further assistance from I-FREED to construct a new building. The initial donation of $500 was received from I-FREED and work commenced in August 2004. After reviewing the progress of construction work, a further donation of $300 was received from I-FREED.

The new building was completed and ceremoniously opened by members of SUCCESS (Wayamba) on May 1, 2005.

The building comprising a spacious class room and an inner room is 20’ x 40’ in size. At prevailing rates, the project would have cost over Rs.200,000 ($2,000) but expenses were minimized using bricks made at the site, using voluntary labour and the provision of free transport of cement, sand and timber by the STF camp. In addition, parents of the school children helped by providing voluntary services.

SUCCESS Wayamba expresses its sincere thanks on behalf of the village of Tampitiya to I-FREED for their generous support.
