Assistance to Tsunami Affected Children in Their Time of Need

Posted Date : 04/15/2005 CST
The killer waves of the South East Asian Tsunami engulfed a large number of children and left behind a generation of kids who now have to face a future without the love of their parents. An older sibling in charge of her young brothers and sisters, an injured father taking care of his children crying for their mother every night, a grieving grandmother charged with taking care of a large number of grand children… such tragic stories are endless and heartrending!

This project targets these families and will provide assistance for as long as it is needed. I-FREED has completed a detailed needs assessment and has now identified over 100 families with 200 such children. They fall in to the following categories:

I-FREED has initiated assistance to the first three groups by providing funds (SL Rs 5000 as a one time payment followed by monthly allowance depending on the assessed needs not to exceed SL Rs. 4500 per family) to meet basic needs. I-FREED will support the families in the first category and assist them obtain means of employment in order to become self sufficient. Categories 2 and 3 need long term support until the children reach adulthood. Their profiles will be published (with out identification information) in order to solicit sponsors. Once enrolled, sponsors will have access to recipients, and can assist directly or through I-FREED. I-FREED plans to expand this program to a 1000 children. Committed volunteers will monitor, provide advice and assistance to enable the families achieve independence and make every effort to ensure that the children continue their education.
